best calibre plugins

Calibre is a great program that lets you manage your digital library, convert files into different formats and send ebooks to your e-reader. But you can also add functionality to Calibre with plugins.

Let's take a look at the best plugins to download for Calibre.

If you're new to Calibre, here's a tutorial on how to get started.

Ebook Translator (a Calibre plugin)

Ebook Translator is, as its name suggests, an extension that lets you translate your digital books into another language.

Although the plugin is free, you'll still need to use a translation program to translate the text. I made a full tutorial on this translation ebook plugin here.

Here are the translation tools that are compatible:

  • Google (free)
  • ChatGPT (OpenAI)
  • ChatGPT (Azure)
  • DeepL
  • Microsoft Edge
  • Youdao
  • Baidu

You'll find this extension (plugin) for Calibre here: https://github.com/bookfere/Ebook-Translator-Calibre-Plugin

WordDumb

WordDumb is a plugin for Calibre dedicated to the Word Wise and X-Ray features available on Kindle e-readers.

This feature is normally only available for ebooks purchased and downloaded from the Amazon bookshop.

But thanks to WordDumb, you'll be able to generate this information on these file formats from Calibre: KFX, AZW3, AZW, MOBI and EPUB.

This extension is available at https://github.com/xxyzz/WordDumb.

PDF Cover

As its name suggests, this extension lets you insert the book cover you've specified in Calibre as the first page of the PDF document.

FanFicFare

If you read a lot of "fan fiction", this extension for Calibre will let you automate the downloading of your favorite stories directly into the software and then send them to your e-reader.

Kobo Utilities

This Calibre plugin adds a number of features that will be useful if you use Calibre with a Kobo e-reader.

It's pretty technical stuff, but it does allow you (for example) to make a backup of all the data and information on your Kobo e-reader - handy if you need to reset your e-reader following a lock-up.

DeDRM

This is probably the best-known plugin, as it allows you to remove DRM from your ebooks.

You can learn more about how it works here: https://world-of-ereader.com/remove-drm-ebook-calibre.html

Annotations

Here's a very interesting plugin that lets you manage all the text you've underlined and the little digital notes you've left on your ebooks.

Annotations is a Calibre plugin that lets you :

  • Import notes
  • Import highlighted passages
  • Manage your notes from within Calibre

This extension is only compatible with Kindle, Kobo and Tolino e-readers.

Count Pages

The Count Pages plugin lets you count the number of words in a book and deduce the number of pages.

You'll see the page count of an ebook in Calibre.

EpubSplit and EpubMerge

These two Calibre plugins allow you to :

Other interesting Calibre plugins

Finally, here's a list of other interesting Calibre plugins and extensions that I don't need to go into :

  • Job Spy: customize the way the software works
  • Kindle Collections: manage your Kindle ebook collections
  • Reading List: create a list of books to read
  • Prettify Cover: make book covers more beautiful by setting them to the right size for the e-reader
  • Find Duplicates: a useful plugin if you have a lot of ebooks in your library and want to find duplicates
