It’s official, Amazon has just presented its range of new 6-inch Kindle e-readers with a base model now available in two editions: a simple plastic version and a more premium aluminum version.
This new Kindle is announced by Amazon as better than the previous version on several points:
- A redesigned and thinner design,
- A lighter and faster Kindle e-reader,
- New color finishes: purple, black, green and blue
- Compatibility with the Kindle Click remote
- A glass that covers the screen and the entire front (flush type)
However, the touchscreen still offers “simple” lighting without a blue light filter. And at the proposed entry price of $169.99 for the 16 GB model with ads on the lock screen, it’s a bit expensive in my opinion.
The big novelty is the arrival of a “basic” but premium model with an aluminum casing that seems to be of better quality. If you pay $189.99 you get this new aluminum e-reader, without ads and with 32 GB of storage instead of the 16 GB of the cheaper version.
The screen seems identical for both versions, with a resolution of 300 PPI (high definition according to electronic ink standards) and a 6-inch diagonal.
According to the information I found, it seems to be a Carta 1300 HD screen, so the latest version available, which offers the best contrast and the best refresh rate.

These two next-generation 6-inch Kindle models are already available on Amazon’s website.

Don’t forget that there are interesting discounts on older Kindle models at very affordable prices, knowing that they offer similar performance on paper.
Personally, I think these are interesting models, but the new price increase for the simplest plastic model, without a blue light filter, seems a bit excessive to me. I imagine they decided to raise prices in order to stabilize them for a few years, which we will see in the coming months…
