New Kindle Colorsoft: too expensive and too early? (+ Signature Edition)

After the announcements of the new Kindle and the new Kindle Paperwhite, Amazon follows up with a new Kindle Colorsoft, once again available in two versions. Isn’t it a little too early?

Amazon is therefore offering a new Kindle Colorsoft e-reader with a 7-inch color e-ink screen with these new features:

  • A redesigned look that is thinner and lighter
  • A “flush” type screen with glass that covers the entire surface of the e-reader (which was already the case, but anyway…)
  • Up to 8 weeks of battery life (which seems consistent to me with the battery life of the previous version)
  • New finishes: black (Graphite) and Fig (a kind of dark red that is quite successful in my opinion)
  • Compatibility with the Kindle Click remote to turn pages remotely

All Kindle Colorsoft models are sold without ads. You should know that some versions of Kindle e-readers display ads on the screen when the e-reader is in sleep mode. So you will not have any with this e-reader.

The Colorsoft is still waterproof with an IPX8 certification.

The 7-inch e-ink screen offers a resolution of 300 PPI in black and white (so high definition) but 150 PPI for colors, which is the best standard for e-ink in 2026.

From what I know, this screen should be technically identical to the previous version, but it is possible that Amazon has improved the color processing software. We will have to wait for the comparisons to know for sure.

Now, the price of this version is $289.99 for 16 GB of storage (see on Amazon.com), which is still quite high.

For the wealthiest readers who demand the best of Kindle e-readers, there is also the Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition with 32 GB of storage, automatic screen brightness adjustment and a “premium” aluminum casing.

The rest is identical (same 7-inch color screen for example) but the price goes up to $319.99.

These new Kindle Colorsoft e-readers will be available on October 28, 2026 and you can pre-order them on Amazon.com. Here are the product pages with the descriptions if you want to take a look:

I think these are the least interesting models of this new Kindle lineup for 2026. Indeed, the specifications have practically not changed (apart from the aluminum version) and the price has increased.

Also, to explain the context behind my thinking about this announcement, I bought the previous version of the Kindle Colorsoft about a year ago to review it. I bought it on sale for a little under $200. The price of $289.99 for an e-reader that is technically identical, or almost, bothers me a little.

And then, was it really necessary to release this new model one year after the release of the previous one? On this point, it seems that it is only a matter of harmonizing the designs of the entire Kindle e-reader lineup.
