  • How to read manga on Kindle?

    e-readers mangas

I will show you where you can find manga and how you can download them and read them on your Kindle e-readers.

First of all, the reading of digital manga is exploding in the world. It is particularly noticeable in Japan where there are more readers of digital manga than paper ones.

But, I think that the "manga ebook" has also the possibility to develop widely outside Japan.

Indeed, because of the absence of color, digital manga weighs less to store than other comics. Moreover, as they are already published in a small format in paper version, e-readers with a screen with a high resolution are at ease for their display (even in 6 inches).

If we add to this the available 7 and 8 inch e-readers and low cost touch tablets, we can think that manga can make a nice digital place in our reading devices.

The problem now is that we don’t necessarily have digital versions of all the manga that are released…

    The Kindle Library

    Kindle softwares

At Amazon, there is a comic book section that allows you to see, on a case-by-case basis, if the volume you are looking for is available on the Kindle e-reader (or the reading application on tablet, smartphone or PC/Mac).

For popular series like Naruto, the digital version costs $4.99 compared to $6 for the paper version. So that’s a nice savings of almost $2 per episode.

What is not bad is that you can search directly and only in the mangas that are available in digital using the search engine of your Kindle e-reader (or on Amazon).

So you can find a lot of things, even if everything is not yet present. I also noticed that recent releases tend to come out in digital too.

So, reissues like GUNNM, have their digital version.

    Prime Reading or Kindle Unlimited

With Amazon, you can subscribe to a service like Prime or Kindle Unlimited.

Kindle Unlimited offer the larger choice but you’ll have to pay a small fee each mounth to access the books and the mangas available.

If you have an Amazon Prime membership, you can access to a catalogue of free ebooks and mangas and the Prime Reading (read this article to know more about it) section of the Kindle Library on your Kindle e-reader. (no extra fee if you already a Prime customer)

Transfer PDF, CBR and CBZ files to your Kindle e-reader

    CBR and CBZ on Kindle

If you’re interested in digital comics, you’ve probably come across files in slightly exotic formats like CBR or CBZ. Here’s how to convert them to PDF.

    > Note : there is a full tutorial on the website to help you read CBR et CBA on Kindle and Kindle Paperwhite (click here).

The CBR or CBZ format requires the use of special software to read them.

Fortunately, thanks to Calibre you can transform these files into PDF files that are easier to use on your different devices: e-readers, tablets, smartphones, PC and Mac.

The advantage of using Calibre to do the conversion is that it offers optimizations regarding the images, in order to display the comics more clearly on a reader (with a black and white screen). But, you can also use another software to do the conversion.

The first thing to do is to install Calibre if you don’t have it on your computer yet. You can go to this site to download it: https://calibre-ebook.com/fr/download

Now you have to import your CBR or CBZ file into Calibre.

You can now transfer PDF, CBR and CBZ to your Kindle device.

If you wan to choose the right e-reader for reading manga you can read this article.

  • Pocketbook Viva e-reader : too expensive ? (available in 2024)

Pocketbook Viva eReader : too expensive ?

Pocketbook continues to release innovative models and the announcement of the Pocketbook Viva e-reader will delight fans of high-end reading material and those who have been waiting for a new generation color e-reader.

Presentation of the Pocketbook Viva e-reader

The Pocketbook Viva is a high-end 8-inch color e-reader announced for the end of 2023.

It is also one of the first readers that will use a new generation color screen based on E Ink Gallery 3 technology with a resolution of 1440 × 1920 pixels for both black and white and color.

This is a brand new way of displaying colors that should allow, finally, to have more vivid colors than on the old screens of the “Kaleido” type used, for example, in the old Pocketbook Color reader.

Of course, we’ll have to wait for the release of this Pocketbook Viva to find out for sure…

Pocketbook also seems to want to offer a very high-end color reader, since the announced price is $599!

This price will certainly cool some people down, but it shows the will of the brand to offer high quality material as far as the color reader is concerned.

    pocketbook viva e-reader

This is especially true since it is not a digital notebook like the Kindle Scribe or the Kobo Elipsa

The Pocketbook Viva offers a new 8-inch color screen, 64 GB of storage memory, an IPX8 certification to make the reader waterproof and the possibility to read audio books (see specifications below) and a pretty good design with physical buttons.

I appreciate this new design which tends to become more and more common with each Pocketbook release, as with the Pocketbook Era, another high-end e-reader.

    Specifications of the Pocketbook Viva

    Pocketbook Viva

Here are the technical specifications of the Pocketbook Viva :

    • Quad core processor
    • 8 Inch Color display Gallery 3
    • Resolution : high resolution of 1440 × 1920 and 300 PPI for both color and black-and-white
    • IPX8 waterproff specification
    • Built-in speaker and Text-to-Speech
    • Bluetooth version 5.2
    • 64 GB of built-in memory – for a large library, which is always at hand;
    • A record number of formats without conversion – PocketBook Viva supports 23 formats (19 book and 4 graphic formats), including formats of comics;
    • Support for 6 audiobook formats – listen to audio files in M4A, M4B, OGG, OGG.ZIP, MP3, MP3.ZIP formats;
    • Dual band Wi-Fi and PocketBook Cloud services – for synchronization with other devices and convenient management of the library;
    • The vast number of dictionaries – in addition to 11 pre-installed language combinations, users have 42 combinations available for free download.

    Price and release date

As you may know, the Pocketbook brand is distributed all over the world (except in France where it is Vivlio that sells Pocketbook e-readers).

Pocketbook now announces an availability in many countries in the start of 2024. On the Pocketbook Store website the e-reader is on “Pre-Order” that will end in february 2024.

It should be noted that the price is high since the recommended retail price is $599 – which seems quite high for a e-reader, even if it is the best color e-reader available!

  • How do I add a new dictionary to my Kobo?

    Kobo ereader

Kobo e-readers are already provided with various dictionaries that allow you to get definitions of words in English, but also English translations from other languages.

Unfortunately, some of the dictionaries used are not sufficient for the taste of some Kobo users. We can often see these defects:

    1. A lack of definition
    2. A lack of freshness

If the role of Kobo (and other e-reader manufacturers) is first and foremost to provide a reliable material for displaying pages of text, it is true that this defect may bother some people.

Fortunately, there is now a solution! It is indeed possible to change the default dictionary and we will see how to add a new dictionary with many more definitions.

Download a new dictionary for Kobo e-reader

The first thing to do is to download this new dictionary.

For French, English, German, Spanish, Italian or Portuguese, I found this project which proposes a dictionary based on Wiktionary, a collaborative site close to Wikipedia: https://github.com/BoboTiG/ebook-reader-dict

We will download (in our case), the French dictionary at this address : https://github.com/BoboTiG/ebook-reader-dict/releases/tag/en (the file to download is called dicthtml-en.zip – you can download it here if the link does not work anymore)

I also found dictionaries for translations in this folder: https://download.wikdict.com/dictionaries/kobo/

Transfer your dictionary to the Kobo e-reader

Now you have to transfer the file to your Kobo e-reader. First of all, you have to connect it to a computer with the USB cable provided with the e-reader.

Then, you have to validate the file transfer on the screen of the Kobo e-reader. In your operating system, you should be able to see the e-reader using a file explorer (keyboard keys "Windows + e" in Windows).

You have to go to the files of your e-reader and find the ".kobo" folder. This folder is special and hidden, so you will need to set the folder view to show this type of file in Windows (or Mac).

All you have to do is copy the new downloaded file into the ".kobo/dict" folder of your Kobo e-reader to install the new dictionary.

Now that you've done that, you can disconnect your e-reader from your computer ("eject" in Windows or Mac) and restart your Kobo.

Setting up the e-reader to use the new dictionary

To use the new dictionary, you'll first need to make sure it's installed properly by going to your Kobo e-reader settings.

It should be called "English – English".

Then, you can use it directly from an ebook by underlining a word.

As we can see the result is much better with this dictionary!

Don't hesitate to leave a comment under this article if you want to bring more details about adding new dictionaries on your Kobo e-reader.

  • Kindle Scribe: not that great…

    Kindle Scribe

It was bound to happen: Amazon is also launching a large-format e-reader with a note-taking function with the Kindle Scribe and its large 10.2-inch screen.

For once, Amazon is obliged to react by offering a machine that competes with the Bookeen Notéa and the Kobo Elipsa.

So the Kindle Scribe is a reading and working machine. Thought as a tool that will allow you to be productive as well as to relax, the Kindle Scribe therefore comes with a stylus that will allow you to take notes and scribble on your electronic documents.

Certainly the screen should do wonders, especially for fans of manga and PDF documents.

The promise of having a stylus without batteries or batteries that is as comfortable to use as a competing stylus is appealing.

People who work in an environment where they have to work, proofread and edit a lot of documents will probably be interested in this machine.

But, if it's just about reading, the price of $369.99 for the 16GB version will put off many book lovers.

Indeed, there are e-readers for less than $200 that do very well for reading ebooks without any headache.

The price is too high for me to buy this Kindle Scribe. So I am unlikely to offer a full review, let alone a comparison with other e-readers. If you only need a Kindle e-reader for ebooks, I think the Kindle Paperwhite is a better alternative.

The e-reader is available and you can learn more about it on Amazon's website if you are interested in this type of device.

  • E-reader Trends for 2023

    new e-readers for 2023

The year 2022 has been rich in new hardware (Kobo Clara 2E and new Kindle to name a few) and the year 2023 also promises some nice things. The opportunity to see what we can expect as new readers…

    A new Kobo Nia?

The first thing that seems obvious is that Kobo must work on an affordable e-reader that would compete with the new Kindle.

Indeed, the Kobo Nia (current e-reader of the range at less than $100) is starting to show its age with its rather slow screen and its not always top definition.

Clearly, if Kobo wants to get back in the race and offer something very good in the entry level, it will have to release a new version of the Kobo Nia.

Let’s hope that 2023 will bring us this new e-reader!

    A new Kindle Oasis?

On the Amazon side, we have already had a renewal of the Kindle Paperwhite with the very good version released in 2021 that offers a great value for money with its 6.8-inch screen.

A few months ago, a new Kindle was released for less than $100.

Logically, it’s the turn of the Kindle Oasis to get a makeover – if Amazon still wants to market it. Indeed, with its price close to $300 and the competition of cheaper and excellent models like the Kobo Libra 2, nothing indicates that Amazon will continue the Oasis adventure.

But, if a new version is to be released, the year 2023 seems to be the right time for Amazon.

New color readers are a key trend

With the arrival of the new Gallery 3 color screen technology, we can expect to see new color readers.

As previously mentioned, the Pocketbook Viva has already been announced and we’ll see what this reader offers in terms of color. The first echoes indicate much better colors than on the Pocketbook Color (for example), but a screen that takes longer to refresh…
