The Kindle Scribe without a frontlight will be released on June 11 in the US! The backlight-free Kindle Scribe had been unavailable since the product was first announced last year in 2025. It had no release date and no way for customers to order it.

TLDR: Amazon has confirmed the Kindle Scribe without a frontlight will launch on June 11, 2026. It features the same 11-inch 300 PPI E Ink screen and stylus as the standard model but drops the built-in light to cut costs. New AI features, including note search, summaries, and spoiler-free reading aids, are also coming.

Amazon confirmed to Good e-Reader that the Kindle Scribe will be available in the United States, as well as several other countries including Canada, Australia, Japan, and across Europe, starting June 11.

This version of the Kindle Scribe uses the same E Ink display as the new 11-inch model, with a resolution of 1980×2640 and a pixel density of 300 PPI.

It also features a touchscreen and ships with a stylus for freehand drawing and editing PDF files or Kindle books.

Google Drive and Microsoft OneDrive integration are available to back up your notes or share your documents with other users, so multiple people can collaborate on the same document or PDF.

The only real difference is the lack of a frontlight on the screen. Otherwise, this more affordable Kindle Scribe packs a new quad-core processor, 1 GB of RAM, 32 or 64 GB of internal storage, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.1, and a USB-C port. For reading, a single charge lasts up to 12 weeks with half an hour of reading per day (though you’ll need to turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth to achieve that kind of battery life).

For writing, a single charge lasts up to 3 weeks with half an hour of writing per day under the same conditions.

This frontlight-free Kindle Scribe will also benefit from a wide range of new AI features. One of them is called AI-powered search, which lets you easily find information across your notebooks. An AI summary option is also planned.

Amazon has also built a feature that lets you send your notes and documents from the Kindle Scribe to Alexa+ to discuss them with the voice assistant. This will become available later in 2026.

Amazon is also rolling out new AI-assisted reading features. One is called “The Story So Far,” which helps you get back up to speed on the book you’re reading, only covering what you’ve already read, with no spoilers.

Ask This Book” lets you highlight any passage while reading and get spoiler-free answers to your questions about things like a character’s motivations or the meaning of a scene.
