After launching the “Pro” version of its flagship XTEINK X4 e-reader, the company specializing in pocket e-readers seemed to want to set the older model aside. But, to everyone’s surprise, a new version of the X4, labeled “classic”, has just been released.
So, the XTEINK X4 Classic is a slightly improved version of the XTEINK X4 that I reviewed here with its original software, and there with Crosspoint (a replacement software).
Because the big advantage of these e-readers is that it is possible to completely replace the default software with another one of your choice. The procedure is fairly simple if you are comfortable with computers.
This new version sells for about $10 more but offers a bigger battery and a gyroscope that allows automatic screen orientation when you hold the e-reader in portrait or landscape mode.
The screen is still around 4 inches, with no front light and no touch input. You will therefore have to use the buttons placed below the screen to navigate the menus.

I also note one questionable choice: there is no longer a USB-C port but a charging port, and a “pogo” pin has been added, probably to reduce the size of the e-reader or to make it lighter. Fortunately an adapter is included in the box, but it is still a shame.
For heavy readers who are afraid of running out of space, a micro-SD expansion slot is present.
On the software side, it supports the TXT, EPUB, MOBI, PDF, XTCH, XTC and XTCZ formats. So, for PDF, you will have to switch software or go through the XTEINK smartphone app, which allows file conversion and transfer to the e-reader.
As always with this brand, you will have to turn to sales sites such as AliExpress to find it at the best price, or look on Amazon if you want to try it and be able to return it easily if you do not like it.
My opinion has not changed about this little e-reader: it is a machine designed above all for tinkerers, and the screen remains a bit small for my taste to enjoy a good reading experience.
But, with its small size that lets you slip it easily into a pocket, it has allowed many people to get started with digital reading and that is really a good thing. That is probably why it has shown up so much in Instagram photos and YouTube videos.
