The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is the first color ereader released by Amazon, two years ago. It is also the most expensive one, with a price that now goes above $300. Well, it seems it is simply starting to disappear from Amazon stores worldwide… And there are several reasons for that.
The Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition (SE to keep it simple) is the high-end version of the Colorsoft, with 32GB of storage against 16GB for the regular version. I have always recommended NOT to buy this ereader because of its price.
If the regular version is already expensive, the SE version is really too expensive compared to the competition from the Kobo Libra Colour or the Pocketbook InkPad Color 3 (which also has a bigger screen).
Now, it is certain that many people bought it for an obvious reason: if you are already an Amazon customer and you are looking for a color ereader, you had no choice between 2024 and 2025, since it was the only color Kindle available.
Amazon corrected the aim by releasing the “regular” Kindle Colorsoft that I reviewed on the site, which has the advantage of being cheaper.

The Kindle range therefore offered 2 versions of the Colorsoft, an expensive SE and a cheaper one. It is obvious that customers should turn to the cheaper version, and that is probably what Amazon understood.
Because for weeks now, the Signature Edition version has been out of stock in many countries, including the US and the United Kingdom. As I write these lines, this model is however still available in some European countries.
So there are several possible explanations for this:
- Amazon is waiting for supply and it will be back in stock soon
- This Kindle Colorsoft Signature Edition is simply going to disappear from the range
- A new version is coming
While it is possible that Amazon releases a new version, I think the explanation is elsewhere.
In my opinion, Amazon would do better to release a more affordable color Kindle, with a 6-inch screen for example, to compete with the other ereaders from the competition that already offer good models of this type, both at Pocketbook and at Kobo.
So, I think Amazon is simply going to stop selling this “SE” and release a new ereader model. Besides, we know that it will be possible to buy replacement batteries for Kindle ereaders in a more or less near future (2027?), which suggests at least a new casing for future Kindles…
If you add to that strongly rising Kobo sales on the American market, historically dominated by Kindle, you can assume that a reaction will come quickly from Amazon.
