The new 10.3-inch black-and-white paper tablet, the reMarkable Paper Pure, delivers the iconic paper-like writing feel that reMarkable is known for, with features focused on productivity.
So here it is: the most original and refined notepad around? Not exactly, since it’s essentially a reMarkable 2 brought up to date.
This new 10.3-inch black-and-white digital notepad carries on the paper-like writing experience that made reMarkable’s reputation, with features built for work rather than reading. First deliveries to consumers will begin in early June, starting at $399.
The screen
The Paper Pure features a 10.3-inch “Canvas” (E Ink) display based on E Ink Carta 1300 technology. Resolution is 1872 x 1404 pixels at 226 PPI. There is no front light, so you’ll need to rely on ambient lighting, much like the Paperslate.
Under the hood
Inside, you’ll find a dual-core Cortex-A55 processor clocked at 1.7 GHz, 2 GB of LPDDR4 RAM, and 32 GB of internal storage. There’s no SD card slot for extra capacity. Internet connectivity and software updates are handled over Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) and Bluetooth 5.1.
The device has a USB-C port and a 3,820 mAh battery. Dimensions are 8.98 x 7.37 x 0.24 inches, with a weight of around 12.7 oz.
A replaceable battery
You’ll notice screws on the back, which signal a replaceable battery. This meets a new regulation requiring that all devices allow battery replacement at end of life, in order to extend product lifespan.
A great move that other brands could learn from.
Design and materials
The design is reminiscent of the first-generation Kindle Scribe, without being a direct copy. The Paper Pure is made of 38% recycled materials, the highest proportion of any reMarkable product. This includes 100% of the lithium and cobalt in the battery, 90% of the magnesium in the central frame, and 73% of the plastic on the back of the device.
Stylus compatibility
The Paper Pure will not be compatible with third-party styluses; only the reMarkable Pen will work. The company opted for a semi-proprietary USI stylus rather than Wacom technology. The reMarkable 2 stylus is also not compatible, so you’ll need to purchase a new Marker or Marker Plus.
The Paper Pure supports the same digital pens as the Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move. Digital ink appears in just 21 ms, keeping it at the top of the market.
Connectivity and integrations
You can sync your notes with Google Drive, OneDrive, and Dropbox, or import web articles and Word documents directly to your tablet using the Read on Remarkable browser extension. With a Connect subscription, even more digital tools are available, like Send to Slack and Miro.
Pricing and availability
Orders for the reMarkable Paper Pure open today, with first deliveries in early June.
It comes in two bundles: with the Marker ($399) or with the Marker Plus and Sleeve Folio case ($449), in three colors: ocean blue, misty green, and desert rose.
It will be sold alongside the Paper Pro and Paper Pro Move. The older reMarkable 2 has been discontinued. New reMarkable users can try Connect free for 50 days. After the trial period, the Connect subscription costs $3.99/month or $39.99/year, and can be canceled at any time.
reMarkable has made a real effort to make its new device more accessible to a wider audience. But even under $400, you still need to spend about $4 a month to get the full feature set, which feels a bit steep.
