XTEINK seems to be riding the success of its XTEINK X4 (review here) and X3 mini e-readers, and is announcing the release of a new device that this time runs on the Android system.
It is another surprise since, only a few days after the announcement of the X4 Classic, XTEINK is back with the S4. This time it is a 4.3-inch e-reader with a black and white e-ink screen and, above all, with an Android system (version 11).
This device seems fairly close to the X4 Pro, with a touchscreen with front light, 32 GB of storage, a 1400 mAh battery and 2 GB of RAM.
These specifications seem rather light to me for a device running the Android system with such a small screen.
Indeed, the Android system is really comfortable with 4 GB of RAM (and more), but above all the applications are not at all suited to small screens, such as 4 to 5 inch ones.
I dare to say this because I have been testing e-readers running Android for years, and it is only in the last year or two that these devices have become truly convincing. You can find reviews on this page by looking at the Boox and Bigme brands for the recent models.
XTEINK has no experience with Android devices, and the software used on its e-readers also leaves something to be desired. That is why many users decide to do without it and replace it with the Crosspoint software…
If you add to that the fact that the brand already released the X4 Pro and the X4 Classic only a few weeks ago, I think this XTEINK S4 is more of a test than a product that was really thought through and finished. Is it a good idea for XTEINK to release no fewer than 3 different e-readers in 2 months? That is hard to say, and the company is certainly at risk of confusing its customers. I also think there is haste with this XTEINK S4, whose design seems rushed.
I also have the feeling that the XTEINK S4 is arriving quickly in order to get ahead of the Boox Picco and the Pocketbook Q, which are normally due to be released soon.
But I hope I am wrong… What do you think?
For now, this device seems to be available only in China, but I am convinced that it will be easy to get hold of through a site like AliExpress…
