We're starting to see a lot of choices when it comes to e-readers with e-ink screens between 7 and 11 inches. It's true, quite a few new models have come out regularly in the last few years. That's why I put together this little comparison for 2025.
So, this article will compare the technical specifications of these devices, to give us an initial analysis of what sets them apart from each other.
Of course, I haven't personally held all of these e-readers, so the information is based on the technical descriptions provided by the manufacturers. But you'll find a lot of reviews here.
My Selection of the Best Large Format E-readers for 2025 (8 inches and up)
The e-readers examined in this article have been selected simply because they are available in the US.
I've avoided including obscure e-readers that are imported from distant countries. However, if you are still interested in these models, you can continue reading because at the end of this article, I'll guide you towards some interesting models (running the Android operating system).

Kobo has also launched an e-reader with a large 10-inch screen and a stylus to introduce a productivity element to the usual e-reader experience.
The Kobo Elipsa 2E is therefore a beautiful, very high-end e-reader reserved for readers who need a very large e-ink screen or who are looking for a note-taking device for work.

The european brand Pocketbook made a splash with the release of a large-format color e-reader aimed at the French market.
The Pocketbook InkPad Color 3 is an e-reader with a large 7.8-inch screen (Kaleido 3 color e-ink) that's very interesting for reading comic books (manga, comics, etc.). Read the review here.
Pocketbook InkPad 4

The InkPad 4 e-reader is available everywhere. This makes it one of the most interesting models in this selection thanks to its perfectly priced and large 7.8-inch screen.
It has a 7.8-inch diagonal with an impressive resolution. Its 32 GB storage capacity allows you to store many ebooks and manga.
I should note the addition of a blue light filter and a well-considered price, which makes it very attractive for readers who are looking for great reading comfort. You can read a review of it here.
7-inch Black and White and Color E-readers
If you're looking for a middle ground between the "classic" e-reader with its 6-inch screen and the large 8-inch or bigger e-reader, there are some interesting 7-inch e-readers to consider.
Kindle Paperwhite E-reader

7" e-reader - 1680 x 1264 pixels e ink screen - Ebook formats supported: Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, EPUB (converted), MOBI, PRC; HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP

Kobo Libra Colour
Kobo Libra Colour

7" e-reader - 150 PPI for Color / 300 PPI for B&W e ink screen - Ebook formats supported: EPUB, EPUB3, PDF, MOBI, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP, TIFF, TXT, HTML, RTF, CBZ, CBR
This is one of the big new releases of 2024: a 7-inch color e-ink e-reader from Kobo.
This Kobo Libra Colour (read the full review here) takes everything that makes Kobo great but with a color screen.
It is more expensive than the competing black and white model from Kindle (Paperwhite), but offers a more comfortable format with its buttons on the side of the screen and the color.
Kindle Colorsoft
Kindle Colorsoft

7" e-reader - 300PPP e ink screen - Ebook formats supported: Kindle Format 8 (AZW3), Kindle (AZW), TXT, PDF, EPUB (converted), MOBI, PRC; HTML, DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP
Amazon offers its first color e-reader with a 7-inch e-ink screen: the Kindle Colorsoft.
Unfortunately, its price is too high for performance at the level of the Kobo Libra Colour.
It is therefore best to favour the Kobo, unless you have a particular fondness for the Kindle brand...
Large Format Black and White or Color Android "E-readers"
In recent years, some e-reader manufacturers have been trying to merge two worlds: that of the e-reader and that of the tablet.
The result is quite surprising with large e-readers (up to 10.3 inches) that use an Android operating system similar to that of your smartphones.
It is then possible to use several ebook reading applications on these devices: Kindle, Kobo, Aldiko, etc.
In France, only the Bookeen Notéa e-reader offers this type of software (Android) and is officially distributed in France. Unfortunately, since the end of 2024, it has become almost impossible to find. There is also a very new and quite confidential e-reader, the Paperslate.
However, you will find other lesser-known brands that offer large format Android e-readers (Onyx and Bigme, for example).
However, even if these devices seem interesting on paper, they are sometimes difficult to use due to their "hybrid" nature and an adaptation to France that is not always perfect.
To form your own opinion, you will find e-reader reviews, reviews of these Android e-readers with video (some models offer a color screen which is nice though), if you want to explore this universe:

Summary & Conclusion: The Choice is Difficult!
My choice falls on two categories of e-readers.
First of all, if you want a recent e-reader that's a little bigger than 6 inches and budget isn't an issue, you should turn to the Kobo Libra Colour which is a good e-reader, including for reading manga.
If you mainly want to spend as little as possible, the Kindle Paperwhite is the cheapest and remains a very good e-reader that's comfortable for reading ebooks.
If you want an even larger but still accessible e-reader, the Pocketbook InkPad 4 is an excellent choice with its 7.8-inch black and white e-ink screen.
The Pocketbook InkPad Color 3 is also interesting, but more expensive due to the presence of a color e-ink screen.
But if you're a bit of an adventurer and you like the Android environment, don't hesitate to consult my reviews of recent Android e-readers on this page to find your happiness.
Finally, don't forget that for a more complete comparison of the different e-readers available (and not just the large formats), you can consult our guide updated every month: Purchasing Guide for the Best E-readers of the Moment.

Why Buy a Large Format E-reader?
A large format e-reader (7, 8 or 10 inch screen) is more comfortable when reading at home. But this comfort comes at the expense of price and portability.
We'll see this in detail.
There are many e-reader formats, but the two most common are:
- 6-inch screen
- 6.8, 7, 7.8 or 8-inch screen
- 10.3-inch screen (close to a large format A4 e-reader)
E-readers with a large screen are also more expensive than the others, which can often be found for less than 100 dollars sometimes (click here).
So, why would you even consider paying more for a large-screen e-reader?
Well, large-format e-readers have a bunch of advantages. First off, you get more screen real estate, which means it can display more text.
This lets you set up your large-screen e-reader to:
- Show more text and flip pages less often.
- Use larger fonts if you have trouble reading smaller text.
So it's a win-win! If you're a heavy reader who mainly reads at home in an armchair, on the sofa, or in bed, it can be really nice to spend more time on a single page.
And if you have vision problems and need to use pretty large fonts, those 6-inch e-readers can quickly feel limiting.
That's where the large-format e-readers shine: you can display really big fonts, and still fit a decent amount of text on the screen.
Lastly, and this is just my personal opinion, I find reading less tiring on a bigger screen (on an e-reader, tablets are still a struggle for me).
However, the large-format e-reader isn't ideal if you're always on the go, commuting on public transport.
Since the device is naturally bigger, it becomes harder to stash away in a small handbag.
This logically leads to preferring 6-inch e-readers for mainly mobile use (unless you have vision issues that push you towards investing in a larger screen).
On a side note, an 8-inch e-reader, like the InkPad 7, or a 10.3-inch one like the Kindle Scribe, the Kobo Elipsa, or the reMarkable is super effective for reading manga.
So, if you're serious about reading digital manga, that's the kind of device you'll want to buy.
